About this area.

Earlier in 797, Sindlingen was mentioned for the first time in a document. The nearby Hoechst AG was a major contributor to the significant population growth at the turn of the 19th century and 20th centuries. In 1917, Sindlingen was made a district in Hochst am Main, which brought Frankfurt am Main to the area in 1928.

Geographical Location of Sindlingen Frankfurt

Sindlingen can be found in Frankfurt’s western city limits, approximately 12 km from its main guard station. It is also about 4km from the airport at the bend of the Main that borders the area to the south-east. It is the district with the lowest elevation in Frankfurt-West. The Sindlinger Mainufer, at almost 88m above sea level, is also the lowest point of Frankfurt. The district rises 110 meters to the northwest. The neighboring Frankfurt districts include Zeilsheim, in the north, and Hochst, with its industrial park of the same name in the East. To the west lies the Main-Taunus District with the township of Hattersheim & its district of Okriftel, while to the south is Kelsterbach, which is the northernmost part of the Gross-Gerau region.

History of Sindlingen (Frankfurt am Main)

The district of Sindlingen also contains the Friedenau settlement, and the southern part of the Annabergstrasse. This area is not included in the official district boundaries. Later, it was administratively assigned the Zeilsheim region. The Neolithic period saw Sindlingen as a populated area. There are 16 sites that have been identified in Sindlingen. They include traces of settlements dating back to the Linear Pottery Period (5600-5500 BC), the Michelsberg Culture (from approximately 4400-3500 BC) as well as the Hinkelstein Group (5000-4800 B.C.). [1] A Villa Rustica was discovered in 1989 during archaeological excavations in Sindlingen’s old town centre. [2]

The Romans had given up the Limes border in 260 AD and cleared their area on the right bank. Invading the former Roman areas, the Germanic tribe the Alemanni settled the areas from the middle of the 3rd century to the end the 5th century AD. The Alamanni expanded westwards into Gaul, Noricum, and other areas from 455 to 507. Unfortunately, only limited information is available. Gregory of Tours claims that the conflict between the Frankish King Clovis II and the neighboring Franks in 496-507 resulted in the defeat of the Alemanni at Zulpich. The Frankish also took control of Sundolingen, an Alemanni settlement. The Chatti region, which was the site of Sundolingen’s settlement, was occupied at this time by the Franks. They incorporated it into their kingdom to defend the Frankish borders against the Saxons, who settled north and again into Chatti, and entered Frankish territory. Sundolingen’s settlement was also included in the Frankish kingdom. It belonged to the Frankish administration of Niddagau. Clovis’ expansion from the Salian kingdom of 481 to the Frankish empire of 511

Between 1892-1897, a Franconian burial ground was found in the Sindlinger Uferterrasse’s western region. It contains 500 graves and is located at the intersection of Lehmkautstrasse & Farbenstrasse. The bodies of the dead were either buried on their backs, or stretched out on their sides facing the rising sun. Museums were built in Hochsthand, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt to display the partly valuable and wealthy grave goods. Sindlingen probably was also captured in the Frankish conquests after the victory of Clovis I. the Frankish King. Sindlingen seems to have been an extensive and prosperous early Franconian settlement, because right next to the Franconian graves with rich grave goods, there were Carolingian-Franconian graves. These flat graves didn’t contain grave goods. This is a reference to the Christian tradition that the deceased should not be given any items in their graves.
