Schwanheim (Frankfurt am Main)

Since April 1, 1928, Schwanheim has been a district in Frankfurt am Main. It is located on the southern bank, in the southwest part of Frankfurt. It is likely that the church of St. Martin im Feld was there for some time before the document was written. The document confirms King Ludwig’s sons, as King Ludwig had died in 876 four years before. It is possible that the small church was built from wood in the past. In 1956, remains of ceramics-covered graves were discovered in a churchyard. They could be identified as Christian burials because they were missing grave goods. These items can be dated back to the time of Christianization begun by Irish-Scottish wandering monks, who evangelized the East Franks and Main.

Kilian, the Franconian apostle is their most well-known representative, and the founder of the Diocese in Wurzburg. Tradition says that he preached from this spot on the Schwanheimer Unterfeld opposite Sindlingen in an area without flooding around 680. This event is listed on page 968 of the Limburg Diocese’s current Gotteslob, hymnal. 700. Other important saints of the diocese such as Albertus Magnus and Bernhard von Clairvaux are on an equal footing. The Marienaltar contains a relic from St. Kilian that can be found in the old parish church Am Abtshof. Kilian was a missionary for 60+ years before Boniface, who is the apostle of Germans, visited Frankfurt during his missionary trip from Mainz to Fulda in order to establish his monastery.

The Martinskirche was the only church on the right bank at the time. Next came the St. Jakobuskapelle in Nauheim, and the Pfalzkapelle St. Salvator Frankfurt. Their catchment area was likely larger than the original Schwanheim district, which ran west from Klaraberg to Kelsterbach via Klaraberg, Kelsterbach and the Goldstein through Niederrad and Oberrad.

This Martinskirche, also known as Merteskerch, fell apart over the course of a century. It started 50 years before Luther published his theses at Wittenberg. The people of Schwanheim gathered to celebrate their last notch in 1467 on Sunday after St. Ulrich. This Saint Ulrich had nothing to do with the Kerbetag. It was born out of a pragmatic solution to celebrate St. Martin’s Day in the summer, rather than the 11th November.

This November day was also used to submit the Martin Tithe. It was therefore a non-popular day for tax payments. But why Ortisei ?? Martin was consecrated bishop in Tours in the summer of 372. This was on the anniversary of its founding. For the people of this old Schwanheim district, July 4th was a more pleasant day to remember St. Martin than November. The people of Schwanheim moved their church consecration celebration to Mauritius on September 22nd 1468. It was used to honor the patron whom they had given their Mauritius chapel (1410).
